Reconciliation

Ask the Holy Spirit for light, be honest without becoming afraid, and remember that God’s mercy is greater than every sin.

Original prompts rooted in Scripture, the Ten Commandments and Beatitudes, with guidance from the USCCB and Catechism of the Catholic Church. The tone is also inspired by Fulton Sheen’s emphasis on Confession as a return to mercy and peace.
Confession is a meeting with Christ’s mercy.
You do not need perfect words. If you feel nervous or forget what to do, tell the priest and ask him to guide you.

How to Go to Confession
Pray and examine your conscience
Ask the Holy Spirit for honesty, sorrow and trust in God’s mercy. Review your life since your last confession.
Begin simply
Make the Sign of the Cross and say, “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been ___ since my last confession.”
Confess your sins honestly
Name your sins clearly. For grave sins, include the kind and number as best you can. If you are unsure, ask the priest for help.
Receive counsel and a penance
Listen to the priest’s guidance and accept the penance he gives you.
Make an Act of Contrition
Express sorrow, trust in God’s grace, and your intention to turn away from sin.
Receive absolution and complete your penance
Listen prayerfully to the words of absolution. Afterward, do your penance as soon as reasonably possible and thank God.
A simple Act of Contrition
Lord God, I am truly sorry for my sins because they have wounded my friendship with You and harmed others. With the help of Your grace, I resolve to turn away from sin, avoid what leads me to it, confess honestly, and complete my penance. Jesus, I trust in Your mercy. Amen.
